An interview with Lidia Falcone-Schiavo: Queen of Alterations

When did you start at The Lake Forest Shop?
August 6, 1979, 36 years ago, in the Alterations Department.
How did you learn to sew so beautifully?
I made my first blouse when I was 9 years from a beautiful old Italian dress my mother gave me. Sadly it didn’t fit me as I made it too small but I used it to dress up one of my dolls. My mother laughed and said she was so proud that I could use a sewing machine. My mother, grandmother and godmother were instrumental in teaching me to sew.
When I was 13, I remember being given a beautiful bolt of yellow picot fabric from my mother, blue yarn from my grandmother and a table cloth to learn the skill of embroidering from my godmother. When I first started at The Lake Forest Shop, Mary Vignocci was instrumental in teaching me the art of altering.
Many people can sew but few can alter.
Describe an experience with a customer that has stuck with you.
A customer called the store in a panic and asked to speak to me about a dress I had altered for her. She pleaded with me to come to her house straight away as the dress was not fitting correctly, and the wedding was today. I arrived and shooed everyone out of the room. I quietly asked her to take the dress off so I could see what the problem was. I put the dress back on her and we started to laugh as the family rushed in to see what all the noise was about. The problem was solved – she had been wearing the dress backwards!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love being with my family, three children and five grandchildren, I love to paint, bake cakes, draw and read mystery and history books.
Any last words of advice for us?
Life is not full of flowers, you have to make the flowers.
